Exam and revision season
Everything so far has been about producing work. Exams are a different problem: nothing you produce matters, only what is in your head on the day. That makes them the purest possible test of lesson 2, and it means AI is either extremely useful or actively harmful depending entirely on one design choice.
Turn a syllabus into a plan
The first job is knowing what you are responsible for, which students routinely get wrong by discovering an entire topic three days out.
"Here is my module syllabus and the exam format. Produce a list of every distinct topic, and for each, the level I need — recognise it, explain it, or apply it. Flag which topics the format suggests carry the most marks."
Then you assign the time, because that requires knowing where you are weak, which the assistant does not.
Ananya's mid-term had six topics. Two she was confident on, three shaky, one she had not attended. The plan gave the untouched one the most time and the confident two a single retrieval session each — which is the opposite of what feels comfortable, because revising what you already know feels wonderful and does nothing.
The question bank, from your own notes
This is the core of AI-assisted revision and it is a direct application of lesson 3's fourth move.
"From my notes below, write twenty short-answer questions and five that require applying the ideas to a new situation. Number them. Do not include answers."
From your own notes, not from the internet, because the exam follows your module. And no answers, because a document with answers becomes something you read.
Then answer them on paper, from memory, before checking anything. Then:
"Here are my answers and here are my notes. Mark each answer. Say what is missing or wrong. Do not be generous."
The marking step is what students cannot do for themselves — you cannot see the gap between what you meant and what you wrote, because you know what you meant. An external marker holding your notes can, and telling it not to be generous is necessary, because the default is encouragement and encouragement at this stage is expensive.
Spacing, which is the actual technique
Answer each question three times across the revision period: once when you first make it, once a few days later, once near the exam. Always from a blank page first.
This is not a productivity tip. Spaced retrieval is the most robustly supported finding in the learning literature, it outperforms every technique that feels more productive, and the assistant's contribution is simply that it makes generating and marking the questions cheap enough to actually do it three times.
The scheduling is trivial: three columns in a spreadsheet, or three dates in a calendar. Complexity here is a way of avoiding the work.
Past papers, used properly
If past papers exist, they are the highest-value material you have, and there is a right and a wrong way to involve AI.
Wrong: ask for model answers and read them. Fluency illusion, at full strength, on the exact material you will be tested on.
Right: write your answer under time pressure, then ask for it to be marked against the mark scheme or the module's criteria, then ask "what would a stronger answer have included that mine did not?" Then write it again.
Under time pressure is doing real work. Exams test retrieval under constraint, and an answer you produced with unlimited time and a tab open tells you nothing about that.
Two things AI is genuinely excellent at here
Being asked the same thing a fifth time. At 1am, on the concept you have now failed to hold on to four times, with no judgement and a different explanation each time. This is a real and underrated benefit, and it is the closest thing to a patient tutor most students will ever have.
Generating variations. "Give me five versions of this problem with different numbers and one with a twist that changes which method applies." Working many variants is how quantitative subjects actually get learned, and the supply of variants used to be the binding constraint.
The day before
Do not learn anything new. Do one full retrieval pass over your question bank from memory, sleep properly, and stop.
There is a specific trap on the last day: an assistant will happily explain a topic you have not covered, clearly and quickly, and you will feel like you have learned it. You have not — you have read something twelve hours before you need to retrieve it, which is the one condition under which the fluency illusion is most complete and least recoverable. Better to be strong on six topics than fluent-feeling on seven.
Do this today: generate ten questions from your own notes on whatever is next, and answer three of them on paper right now. The discomfort you feel doing that is the whole difference between this and reading.
